How to Use Amazon S3 Batch Replication

Amazon S3 data resides in buckets with multiple directories and subfolders. While creating the back, you need to choose a region to optimize latency and reduce data access costs. Following are the steps to configure Amazon S3:

  1. Create an S3 Bucket
    Create an S3 bucket by:
    • Opening an account for the AWS Management Console and logging in
    • Once you log in, search for S3
    • Then click ‘Create Bucket,’ which takes you to the page where you have to enter the Name of Your Bucket
      You can configure permissions for the S3 bucket in several ways. You can change the default permission, which is ‘Private,’ through the AWS Management Console. It is always best to be selective by adding only necessary permissions for optimal security while granting access to your newly created S3 buckets.
    • You can choose tags, versioning, Object-Level Logging, and default encryption among the different configure options. All these options are optional.
    • Finally, create the bucket by clicking on ‘Create Bucket’
  2. Upload Files to the Created S3 Bucket
    You can upload files to your created S3 bucket by:
    • Clicking on the bucket name
    • Then, click on ‘Upload,’ followed by clicking ‘Add Files’ and adding the desired file
    • Finally, click ‘Upload’

      You can see on the screen the respective document you selected uploading into your created bucket.
  3. Access Bucket Data
    You can access an AWS S3 bucket data by clicking on the file you want to access by accessing the URL, which takes you to a screen that tells you that you don’t have access to the objects in the bucket. Fix this issue by:
    • Navigating ‘Bucket Permission’
    • Clicking ‘Edit’ and unchecking ‘Block All Public Access’
    • Then, click ‘Save,’ making the uploaded file public.

Now you can reach the object URL.

Remember that bucket names must be unique since they are universal namespaces. The screen displays an HTTP code 200 after successfully uploading an object to an S3 bucket.

Security and Encryption on Amazon S3

By default, S3 buckets are private. The different Amazon S3 data access control mechanisms include:

  • AWS IAM (Identity and Access Management) policies for authorizing IAM users to have viscous control over their Amazon S3 bucket
  • Bucket policies for adding or denying permissions on objects in a bucket
  • Access Control Lists (ACLs) to grant certain permissions to particular objects
  • Query String Authentication to share Amazon S3 objects

AWS can automatically encrypt data at rest with several key management solutions for encryption. Therefore, it is possible to configure S3 buckets to encrypt objects automatically. Alternatively, using client-side data encryption before uploading to S3 is still possible.

Client-side encryption

The client-side encryption method manages your own keys, knowing that the data remains encrypted in the S3 buckets. The loss of the latter means the impossibility of using this data again.

In transit

Data transfers from or to Amazon S3 can be encrypted with an SSL/TLS certificate.

At rest

Server-side encryption on Amazon S3 uses 256-bit AES symmetric keys. There are three ways to manage keys. Amazon S3 Server Side Encryption (SSE-S3) natively encrypts data by managing encryption keys.

For more functionalities, it is possible to use AWS Key Management Service (SSE-KMS), which manages authorizations for the use of keys and an access statement, thus allowing to benefit from an additional level of control and consult data access attempts. With SSE-KMS, the keys are managed in AWS KMS. With SSE-C (Customer Provided Keys), Amazon S3 can also encrypt data at rest using customer-provided encryption keys.
